Black Wood Mill started with an old sawmill, a willingness to figure things out, and an appreciation for making good use of what was already there.

In 2019, Glenn brought an old sawmill home to our Southern Utah property after it had spent years sitting unused in the Arizona desert. It wasn’t running, but after plenty of tinkering, rebuilding, adjusting, and persistence, the old mill came back to life.

What began as a way to mill our own lumber gradually became something more. There were trees that could be put to better use, projects that called for material you couldn’t simply pick up at a lumber yard, and people looking for someone willing to take on work that didn’t always fit neatly into a standard box.

Over time, that became Black Wood Mill.

FROM NECESSITY TO PASSION

Working with our own timber made it possible to produce lumber around the needs of the project rather than designing the project around whatever happened to be available at the store. It also opened the door to different species, dimensions, cuts, and pieces of timber that might otherwise have gone unused.

That practicality remains a big part of how Black Wood Mill approaches the work today. We mill rough-sawn and dimensional lumber, beams and timbers, live-edge slabs, quartersawn and riftsawn lumber, and specialty cuts for projects ranging from straightforward construction to one-of-a-kind builds.

Sometimes the request is conventional. Sometimes it starts with:

“Here’s what I’m trying to do. Can you make it?”

Those are often the best projects.

MAKING USE OF WHAT’S HERE

Living in a community where barter, trade, and helping one another are still very much alive has shaped the way Black Wood Mill does business.

A tree that needs to come down may still have value. A log one person has no use for may be exactly what someone else needs. And good timber doesn’t necessarily need to become waste simply because its original purpose has ended.

Black Wood Mill provides professional tree removal, wildfire mitigation, and defensible-space clearing, but whenever the material allows, the work doesn’t have to end with removing the tree. Viable timber can often be recovered and milled into lumber, slabs, beams, or other usable material.

Not every tree can or should become lumber. But when good material is there, we believe it’s worth considering what it can become before treating it as waste.

BUILT FOR THE PROJECTS THAT DON’T FIT IN THE BOX

Black Wood Mill works with homeowners, builders, woodworkers, and property owners on projects that don’t always fit the standard lumber-yard experience. Whether that means milling logs a customer already has, producing an unusual dimension, cutting structural material, or finding the right slab, we don’t expect every customer to arrive knowing exactly what they need.

Part of the work is understanding what someone is trying to accomplish and finding a practical way to get there.

The project comes first. The material and the process follow.

Today, Black Wood Mill provides custom sawmilling and rough-sawn lumber, live-edge slabs, professional tree services, and wildfire mitigation throughout Southern Utah.

We remain locally operated, veteran-owned, and intentionally hands-on. The equipment and capabilities have grown since that first old sawmill came home in 2019, but the approach behind the business remains simple:

Figure out what needs to be done. Find a good way to do it. Do the work well. And whenever possible, make something useful out of what you have.
